It may have been raining outside, but spirits were high today in the Meeting Barn during the kickoff of Block A of the Morven Summer Institute! We are thrilled to have a very diverse group of 26 students, all coming from different departments and years at the University for Professor Freedman’s course, PLAP 3160: “Politics of Food.”
Students arrived at 10am and after a few introductions, they jumped into an engaging exercise led by Prof. Freedman introducing students to think critically about the plethora (and often unhealthy) food options found in a typical 21st century diet. Next, students braved the gray skies and embarked on a short walking tour of some of the grounds at Morven — which are still beautiful, rain and all! After a quick lunch break, students dove straight into their first day of class.
Throughout the next four weeks, this blog will keep you posted on the daily lessons and unique programming elements of the Morven Summer Institute — which will feature treks to the Morven Kitchen Garden, field trips, documentary screenings in the Morven movie theater, guest speakers, and much more. You will see photos, video clips, and hear directly from the students of the Summer Institute.
